Полвека назад в нашей стране был стайер, не имевший себе равных, – двукратный олимпийский чемпион Владимир Куц. Это первый олимпийский чемпион на дистанциях 5000 и 10 000 м, самый популярный спортсмен 1950 х годов и едва ли не самая большая загадка в истории спорта…

Ранняя весна 1952 года, Краснознаменный Балтийский флот, побережье Финского залива. Подразделение, в котором служил 25-летний Куц, оказалось отрезанным от базы. Идти по льду за продуктами и письмами стало опасно. Но ждать, пока в часть пробьется катер, – долго. Поэтому, едва снова прихватил мороз, Куц вместе с тремя сослуживцами отправился на большую землю. Прибыли к вечеру, возвращаться решили утром. Но Владимиру не терпелось принести товарищам весточку из дома. И он пошел обратно ночью, один. Все тридцать километров пути его валил с ног пронизывающий балтийский ветер, снег хлестал по лицу. Ослепленный и обессиленный, он не заметил трещину и… провалился в воду. Никто не мог понять, как он выжил. Посчитали везунчиком, а дело, наверное, было в упрямстве.

В детстве в родном Алексине его – полноватого и неуклюжего – прозвали Пухтей. Но это не мешало ему бегать наперегонки с отцом, за зайцами в лесу, на самодельных лыжах – в школу в соседнее село и стать чемпионом деревни по задержке дыхания в бочке с водой. В 16 лет, приписав себе два года, Куц ушел на фронт биться с фашистами. В штабе полка его пожалели и отправили в артиллерийское училище, а он при бомбежке потерял все свои документы. После освобождения Алексина вернулся домой и увидел на стене свою фотографию – в черной траурной рамке. Записался в школу снайперов и хотел снова пойти на фронт, но война закончилась. Тогда Куц пошел служить на Балтийский флот и остался на сверхсрочную. Там и пробежал свой первый кросс. Невысокий крепыш покорил спортивное начальство, и его включили в сборную Военно-морского флота. Так Куц выбрал себе спортивную судьбу.

Сильный и выносливый, он мог часами наматывать круги по армейскому аэродрому. Поначалу бегал так, как умел: не технично и с примитивной тактикой. «Протащив» на себе соперников всю дистанцию, мог уступить на последних метрах. Понимал, что самому ему с этим не справиться. Стал собирать информацию о беге, расспрашивал знакомых о тренировках стайеров. И судьба свела его с известным тренером, в прошлом спринтером и прыгуном – Леонидом Хоменковым. С ним Куц впервые на «пятерке» пришел вторым, недобрав секунду до первого разряда. В июне 52-го, за два месяца до открытия первой для сборной СССР Олимпиады, весь свой десятидневный отпуск Куц провел в Таллинне, на стадионе парка Кадриорг, где тренировались сильнейшие флотские бегуны. Там встретил Александра Чикина, тренера-универсала, который работал с прыгунами, метателями и бегунами. Он научил Куца распределять силы по всей дистанции, расписал тренировки на год и посоветовал найти в Ленинграде тренера сборной СССР Григория Никифорова.

Вообще-то поездка в Таллинн была нарушением режима. Той ночью в Финском заливе Куц отморозил ноги, и войсковой врач запретил ему тренироваться. Но разве в двадцать пять думают о здоровье? Он уже стал чемпионом флота, выполнил «мастера», прочитал все книги и журналы о беге. И скоро предстояла поездка в Ленинград, на сборы Военно-морского флота. Куц был еще «сырым»: наступал на стопу с пятки, делал много лишних движений, из-за особенностей строения поясницы бегал тяжело и закрепощенно. Но этот стиль уже стал привычкой. И нужен был грамотный специалист, чтобы исправить технику. Никифоров считался самым прогрессивным тренером. Он не стал «ломать» Куца, а скорректировал технику с учетом его особенностей. Постепенно бег Куца стал свободным, экономичным и накатистым. Длина шага – 187 см, скорость – 6,9 м/с. Он научился восстанавливаться на дистанции и легко переносил большой недостаток кислорода. Единственным слабым местом попрежнему была тактика.

В июле 53-го на Фестивале молодежи и студентов на «пятерке» Куц лидировал всю дистанцию. Но на финише уступил чеху Эмилю Затопеку. А в матче СССР – Венгрия в том же стиле проиграл Йожефу Ковачу. И, несмотря на победу с мировым рекордом на чемпионате Европы, спортивная общественность не восприняла Куца всерьез. Коренастый, широкогрудый, он был похож скорее на борца, чем на стайера. И имел репутацию человека, не умеющего думать на дистанции. Но прошло два года, и кинограмму бега Владимира Куца стали публиковать в спортивных журналах, а технику и тренировки – копировать. К Олимпиаде 56-го в Мельбурне Никифоров разработал для него новую тактику. Теперь Куц уходил со старта в отрыв и сбрасывал скорость. Как только слышал за спиной дыхание, делал рывок. И так до тех пор, пока основная группа – физически измотанная и психологически сломленная – не оставалась далеко позади.

На олимпийской «десятке» рекордсмену мира англичанину Пири, австралийцу Лоуренсу, французу Мимуну и венгру Ковачу Куц предложил обычный для себя темп: первый круг за 61,4 с. Вызов принял только Пири. Перед пятым кругом Куц резко затормозил и за 3 км до финиша заставил Пири повести забег. Пробежав рядом с ним метров сто, ушел в отрыв. Последний, 25-й круг прошел за 66,6 с и с результатом 28.45,6 выиграл золото. Пири, незадолго до Олимпиады отобравший у Куца мировой рекорд, пришел восьмым. На «пятерке» наученные горьким опытом соперники приготовились бороться с тактикой «рваного бега», а Куц ушел со старта на максимальной скорости и сохранил ее на всю дистанцию.

Темп был настолько высок, что американец Делингер и югослав Мугош сошли. Это было второе золото и новый олимпийский рекорд – 13.39,6. Куц на церемонии закрытия нес знамя советской делегации. После такого триумфа весь мир ждал от сильнейшего стайера планеты новых побед и рекордов. Но вместо этого… начался его долгий марафон по медицинским кабинетам и мучительный спуск с Олимпа. Врачи обнаружили у него серьезное заболевание ног – проницаемость сосудов и капилляров – и категорически запретили бегать. Но Куц не смог уйти, даже понимая, что сильно рискует. Недаром ведь говорят: бегуны живут только на дорожке. Физическая нагрузка и победы позволяли испытать чувства, которых он не находил в обычной жизни. И Куц снова вышел на беговую дорожку. Выиграл французский кросс «Юманите», установил в Риме мировой рекорд, который продержался восемь лет. А болезнь прогрессировала, и результаты резко упали. В 57-м, в традиционном бразильском новогоднем пробеге, еле добравшись до финиша, пришел восьмым. Спустя восемь месяцев, на чемпионате страны в Таллинне, – последним. Он стал проигрывать даже на тренировках – абсолютно всем. Чувствовал себя совершенно бессильным, плакал, царапал землю от отчаяния.

И… ушел из большого спорта. Побежденным. Куц был не готов к такому удару. Как жить дальше? Как найти себя в новой жизни? К тридцати годам за плечами семилетка и никакой профессии. Он и так всегда стеснялся своих пробелов в образовании. Особенно когда женился на умной, образованной женщине, выпускнице факультета журналистики МГУ. Старался тянуться за ней: учился грамотно говорить и писать, штудировал школьные предметы. «Я обязательно должен стать образованным человеком», – говорил Куц своим преподавателям в школе тренеров при Московском институте физкультуры. Когда поступил в Ленинградский военный физкультурный институт, «теория» уже пошла хорошо. Но вот беда: «практику» – легкую атлетику и гимнастику – олимпийский чемпион Куц еле тянул. У него отекали и теряли чувствительность ноги. В спортзале он искал малейшую возможность, чтобы передохнуть. А на лекциях садился на галерку, чтобы можно было ненадолго прилечь. Каких же трудов и терпения стоило Куцу высшее образование! Но ГОСы он все-таки сдал и получил направление в ЦСКА.

Тренер Куц подготовил несколько сильных бегунов. Рекордсменом страны стал Владимир Афонин. Серебро первенства страны выиграл Сергей Скрипка. А команда, с которой он работал, победила в матче СССР – США. Казалось, это вполне достойное продолжение карьеры. Особенно с учетом того, что из великих спортсменов редко получаются великие тренеры. Но Куц всегда мечтал вырастить олимпийского чемпиона, а его лучшим ученикам не везло. Афонин за год до Олимпиады в Мюнхене получил травму. Скрипка в финале олимпийского забега лишился шиповки, упал и пришел шестым. Они говорили: «Куц – хороший тренер, заботится о нас, как о собственных детях». Но что делать, если человек хочет чего-то большего.

Молчаливый и замкнутый, Куц почти ни с кем не делился своими бедами. Но в голосе звучали обида и боль. Он все время повторял, что жизнь к нему несправедлива, и… искал спасения в алкоголе. Эти запои не могли остановить ни близкие, ни друзья. Он потерял сначала одну жену, потом вторую. Ненадолго остановился – после автокатастрофы и инсульта. Но потом снова сорвался. Он и сам как будто презирал себя за это безволие. Однажды сказал брату: «Если со мной что случится, поставьте мне хороший памятник. Напишите, что здесь лежит такой вот идиот. И посадите березку». А через месяц – 16 августа 1975 года – принял несколько таблеток снотворного, запил водкой и не проснулся…

Могла ли жизнь лучшего стайера планеты сложиться по-другому? Об этом можно только гадать. Личность Владимира Куца, его спортивная карьера и дальнейшая судьба оставили много загадок. В свое время ученые даже обращались к нему с просьбой – дать разрешение на исследование своих органов после смерти. Куц отказал. Сумела бы в этом разобраться наука? Тоже – вопрос. Кто-то говорит, что Куц был самородком, классическим стайером с «медленными» мышечными волокнами, способными поглощать много кислорода. Кто-то считает, что все дело в поздней специализации: он начал бегать уже взрослым, минуя спортивную школу, поэтому сохранил здоровое сердце, способное справляться с большими нагрузками. Ну, а жизнь после спорта… Кто-то утверждает, что во всем виноват серотонин – «гормон радости», которого у великого бегуна было слишком мало. Но разве может быть мало радости у человека, который умеет побеждать?..
